Jewelry care
Made to last a lifetime.
Simple habits keep your piece bright and secure. Here's how to wear, clean and store it.
Everyday wear
Fine jewelry is made to be worn. A few habits keep it at its best.
- Take it off for heavy manual work, the gym and sports.
- Put it on last, after lotion, perfume, hairspray and makeup.
- Remove it before swimming, cleaning or gardening.
- Hold rings by the band, not the stone, when taking them off.
Cleaning at home
Warm water and mild soap are all most pieces need.
- Fill a small bowl with warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap.
- Soak your piece for a few minutes to loosen oils and lotion.
- Brush gently with a soft toothbrush, paying attention to the back of the stone and around the setting.
- Rinse in clean warm water. Use a bowl rather than an open drain.
- Pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
What to avoid
- Chlorine. Pools and hot tubs can weaken and discolor gold over time.
- Harsh chemicals. Bleach, household cleaners and abrasive powders, including toothpaste, can damage metal and dull its finish.
- Ultrasonic cleaners, for some pieces. They can loosen small stones in pavé and other delicate settings. Ask us before using one.
- Lotions and oils. They leave a film that clouds a stone's sparkle.
- Hard knocks. Diamonds are tough, but a sharp blow at the wrong angle can chip a stone or bend a prong. Take rings off for the gym and heavy work.
Storage
Store each piece on its own, in a soft pouch or a lined box with separate compartments. Diamonds are hard enough to scratch metal, softer gemstones and even other diamonds.
Fasten chains and bracelets before putting them away so they don't tangle, and use a travel case when you're on the move.
Professional checkups
We recommend a professional polish and prong check once a year. Prongs wear down slowly, and a quick look can catch a loose stone before it becomes a lost one.
Between checkups, stop wearing the piece and reach out if you notice any of these:
- The stone moves, turns or rattles.
- A prong looks bent, flattened or lifted.
- The ring catches on clothing or hair.
Caring for your metal
Yellow and rose gold
Both are warm, classic and durable. Fine scratches are normal with daily wear and can be polished out. Higher karat gold, like 18k, is softer than 14k, so it shows wear a little sooner.
White gold
White gold is usually plated with rhodium for its bright, white finish. The plating wears gradually, and a warmer tone may start to show through. Re-plating restores the original color. Reach out if you'd like to talk about yours.
Platinum
Platinum is the most durable choice. Over time it develops a soft, satin patina that many people love. If you prefer a high shine, it can be polished back to a mirror finish.
Diamonds and gemstones
Lab-grown and natural diamonds share the same physical and chemical properties, so you care for them the same way. Both are very hard, and both attract oil, which is why regular cleaning makes such a difference.
Some gemstones, like emeralds, opals and pearls, are more delicate. If your piece includes one, ask us before cleaning it with anything more than a soft, damp cloth.
Warranty and repairs
We offer warranty coverage on manufacturing defects and work quality. The specifics depend on the piece and are outlined in your purchase agreement. If there's ever an issue caused by craftsmanship or manufacturing, we take care of it.
We also resize and repair our own pieces and jewelry from other jewelers. Share the details and we'll give you an honest, upfront quote. See shipping & returns for more.
Common questions
How often should I clean my jewelry?
For pieces you wear every day, a gentle clean every week or two keeps them bright. Lotion and skin oils build up under the stone and dull its sparkle, and a quick soak and brush brings it back.
Do lab-grown diamonds need different care?
No. Lab-grown and natural diamonds share the same physical and chemical properties, so you care for them the same way.
Can I use an ultrasonic cleaner?
It depends on the piece. Vibration can loosen small stones in pavé and other delicate settings, and some gemstones shouldn't go in at all. When in doubt, stick to warm water and mild soap, or ask us first.
Is my piece covered by a warranty?
We offer warranty coverage on manufacturing defects and work quality. The specifics depend on the piece and are outlined in your purchase agreement at the time of order.
