• Diamond size and grade: carat, clarity and color matter most.
• Lab-grown or natural: lab-grown typically costs 30 to 50 percent less.
• Metal: 10k, 14k or 18k gold, or platinum.
• Setting: pavé, side stones and detailing add work.

Choose a shape that looks larger, such as oval or radiant. Pick clarity grades whose differences aren't visible to the eye. Or choose lab-grown for significantly more size per dollar.
